Top 10 Reasons to Use Apple Cider Vinegar for Your Health

Author: Hope Pope

Copyright (c) 2008 Hope Pope

Here are top 10 reasons to use Raw Apple Cider Vinegar for your health. (However, don't use anything but "Raw apple cider vinegar. Braggs is a great brand.)

1. Energy. Take 1 tablespoon, 2 times a day in 8 ounces to 16 ounces of water. This is especially helpful if you have a baby or little children... and you need the energy to keep up with them.

2. Bug bites. To take away the itching and the bites quickly, dab the bites with straight ACV or mix it with half water, half vinegar.

3. Slows down bleeding during menstrual cycle. To lessen the bleeding each period, take 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar in a glass of water... 2 times a day.

4. Cuts. Hippocrates used raw apple cider vinegar to treat cuts. It was helpful years ago and it is helpful now. It stops the bleeding rather quickly and heals cuts as well. Put a compress of straight ACV or mix it with half vinegar and half water. Does it sting? Yes, it typically does... just like any other treatment would. But it will only typically sting for a few seconds.

5. Shiny hair. Use apple cider vinegar after shampooing for a beautiful shine. Mix one half of a cup of ACV with one half of a cup of water... and then rinse the hair with this. Then rinse again to get it all out of the hair.

6. Fever. Put 1 cup of APPLE CIDER VINEGAR in the tub and soak in it for 10 to 20 minutes. If the fever is extra high, it is recommended to do this two times a day. This is the only thing that worked to bring my child's fever down... on more than a few occasions.

7. Cysts. Dab ACV on the cyst for a few minutes (if the cyst is really big, a longer time is suggested... such as 10 minutes). Putting ACV on a bandaid ... and applying a bandaid on the cyst all night ... is often helpful.

8. Earache. Using ACV in the ear has shown to help an earache. Make a mixture of ½ tsp ACV and ½ tsp distilled water... and put a few drops in the ear.

9. Toothache. Swish the Vinegar in the mouth... especially the area where it is affected. Keep it in the mouth as long as possible. ACV has a very strong smell ... so some people might not be able to do this... but if it is possible, it can be very helpful.

10. It's cheap! It costs less than $6 (in most health stores) and it cures so many things.

What Steps Have I Taken To Go Green? Replacing conventional items with safer/healthier products.

Before I started this green blog, I really had no idea that:
  • The FDA doesn't regulate cosmetics or personal care products.
  • The cosmetics I put on my face were toxic.
  • The deodorant I used had aluminum in it.
  • The food I ate was filled with chemicals and pesticides.
  • The conventional household cleaners I used were filled with harmful chemicals.
  • The dangers of plastics, non-stick cookware, aspartame, and the list goes on.
  • Lots of items on the store shelves are NOT safe for me or the environment.
Okay, so the first half of my life I've been living in a toxic world!

TIP: I've relied on iherb.com, an online store selling over 10,000 items -many brand name natural products to help me go green. With super low shipping, discounted prices, and extremely fast delivery, this site provides me with my personal care items, green cleaning products, gum, mints, vitamins and more- that I can't get locally. Get $5 off your first time iherb.com order when you use my coupon code CEL445. I hope that by shopping at iherb.com, you will be inspired to make healthier choices too:)

I'm hopeful that my chemical footprint will be less visible for the 2nd half of my life.

It does take self-discipline to keep your wallet closed until you are sure that what you are buying is healthy for you, your family, and the environment. You vote with your dollars. Living simply makes sense.

Questions to ask yourself:
  • Why buy 10 toxic products to clean your house when just 2 natural products will work even better? (These products effect you, your family and your pets!)
  • Why slather your face & body with 10 chemical filled personal care items daily when-a few organic or natural products would treat you like the queen you should be?
  • Why eat unhealthy when eating healthy is readily available?
Here are some specific steps I've taken (see below) to continue my lifelong green journey. Maybe this list will inspire you to make some changes in your own life. Be sure to post a comment and share your story.

PERSONAL CARE ITEMS
DEODORANT: Did you know most deodorants on the store shelves feature aluminum as one of the main ingredients? YES! Read this article to find out the dangers of Aluminum in Deodorant I've since replaced conventional deodorant with a straight DIY baking soda paste OR I use Home Health Herbal Magic.

I avoid perfume and limit the products I use that list fragrance as an ingredient. Instead, I use 100% Natural Vanilla on my pulse points when I want to wear a hint of vanilla. This blend is pre-diluted with jojoba oil so it's ready to use. I enjoy the delicious light aroma and health benefits from wearing natural vanilla oil.

SHAMPOO: Replaced brand name shampoo with SLS-FREE Giovanni Magnetic Energizing Shampoo . Why? "The vast majority of these products (brand name shampoos) contain toxic chemical compounds like MIT that contribute to cancer, liver disorders and neurological diseases."-SOURCE: http://www.naturalnews.com/003210.html. COSMETICS
Before I buy any cosmetics or personal care products, I first check the ingredients and the safety rating on the Skin Deep database here: www.cosmeticsdatabase.org.

Read my interview with Stacy Malkan, co-founder of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and author of Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry here: Author Interview: Stacy Malkan: Not Just A Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of The Beauty Industry

LIP BALM: Since I started making my own lip balm, I'll never go back to store-bought balms! Anyone can make their own balm using this kit. For my recipe, I use only 2 ingredients--EVCO (extra virgin coconut oil) and beeswax- which makes a slick (not waxy) moisturizing balm with just a touch of shine.

I eat & drink organic whenever I can. Why? Click here to learn the benefits of eating organic
"Chemical pesticides or herbicides to control weeds and pests find their way into our bloodstream through our water and food supply, in the air we breathe and by being absorbed through our skin."-Source http://www.sprig.com/7_Everyday_Environmental_Causes_of_Breast_Cancer/page/2

TABLE SALT: I no longer use conventional table salt. Instead I use either Miracle Krystal Salt
or pink Himalayan Crystal Salt.
OILS: I use EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) to cook with and have incorporated EVCO (Extra Virgin Coconut Oil) into my diet. It's great on stove-top popcorn!

A NOTE ABOUT SODA-->Not only does soda contain aspartame, the so-called sweet poison but it contains other harmful components. Knowing this, I cannot sit down and enjoy a soda.
Instead, I will continue to enjoy my water flavoring it up with a slice of lime or lemon.
Health benefits of lime

GUM: I've been a major gum chewer all my life so I was determined to find a healthy replacement than what is found on the store shelves. I found aspartame-free Spry Gum which is naturally sweetened with Xylitol. Read this article to find out the health risks of aspartame.

LAUNDRY
Replaced traditional detergent with SOAP NUTS/Laundry Berries, which I sell here on my blog (see right hand side).

Why?
"When we clean our clothing with chlorinated laundry detergent and bleach, inhalation can irritate or damage the lungs and upper airway. Your healthy alternative is to launder your clothes in baking soda or natural detergent. Brighten those whites with borax or non-chlorine bleach. When you stick to the natural stuff, you will not only get truly clean clothes but also help save the environment from degradation."--SOURCE: http://health.yahoo.com/experts/drmao/7141/clean-clothes-and-the-toxins-they-hide/

More about laundry detergent:
source: http://www.sprig.com/7_Everyday_Environmental_Causes_of_Breast_Cancer/page/2
"A class of chemicals called alkylphenols make these products create suds and stabilize the other ingredients. The problem with these chemicals (such as nonoxynol, octoxynol, or nonylphenol ethoxylate) is not only is direct contact risky, but they aren't biodegradable so they can be found in your drinking water and in the air. The danger: A 1994 study published in the medical journal Endocrinology found that these chemicals actually mimic your body's natural estrogen in the body so they can stimulate cell or tumor growth."

CLOTH BAGS:
I created a one-of-a-kind Take A Walk On The Green Side Tote Bag that I take with me when I shop. Makes a great gift or treat yourself to one.

KITCHEN

COOKWARE-->>Replaced non-stick cookware with stainless steel. Why? Polytetrafluoroethylene or PTFE, the chemical name for the coating on non-stick cookware can be toxic to humans.

POPCORN-Replaced microwave popcorn with stainless steel stove-top popper-> Why? A chemical coating used in microwave popcorn bags breaks down when heated into a substance called perfluorooctanoic (PFOA). The EPA has identified PFOA as a “likely carcinogen.”

PLASTICS-> Replaced plastic storage containers with Pyrex glass storage sets
Why? Source:http://www.sprig.com/7_Everyday_Environmental_Causes_of_Breast_Cancer
"Bisphenol-A, a chemical used to make plastic stable but also leaches out of the plastic and into the food or drinks you ingest. The danger: "Sustained exposure over time can effect your estrogen system to disrupt your normal hormone function of your breast cells to possibly feed and promote cancer," says Janet Gray, Ph.D., director of the Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Center at Vassar College."

SPORTS BOTTLES-->Replaced plastic sports bottles with stainless steel bottles. Why? Plastic bottles contain a number of chemicals, some of which are unhealthy. Use Code 2468 to receive 8% off your order here.

CANNED FOODS-> Limiting my canned food intake. Why? Many canned foods are lined with a plastic coating made from BPA, which can leach into the food. BPA (bisphenol-A,) is an endocrine-disrupting chemical.

CLEANING SOLUTIONS
"Rid your home of toxic chemicals. They harm adults as well as children. There's more to the danger than ingesting poisons: your skin absorbs them, and your lungs inhale the fumes. Your liver and fat cells store them."--SOURCE:
http://www.non-toxic.info/

DISH SOAP:
Dish soap =Seventh Generation Natural Dish Liquid.
Automatic dishwasher detergent= Seventh Generation Dishwasher Gel.
My fave dish towels = Flour Sack Towels.

DUSTING FURNITURE:
Instead of using Pledge, simply dust with a slightly damp (or dry) reusable microfiber wonder cloth. However, if you feel you can't live without a dusting solution, use this HOMEMADE SOLUTION>> 1/4 cup lemon juice mixed with tbs. of olive oil. NOTE: If you have leftover solution, store it in the fridge.

WINDOW CLEANER:
HOMEMADE SOLUTION->>Mix 1 quart warm water with 1/4 cup white vinegar. Store in a spray bottle.

TOILET BOWL:
HOMEMADE SOLUTION>>baking soda. Simply scrub with baking soda. OR for stain removal, use 1/4 cup borax and let sit for 30 minutes- then scrub and flush.

The Many Health Benefits Of Coconut Oil

Author: Dianne Ronnow

Have you heard about coconut oil yet? People are adding coconut oil to their diets and are getting incredible results. They are losing weight, getting more energy, and getting healthier.

Coconut oil is safe to use, and does not turn to fat in your body. It raises the metabolism, so you burn more fat and have more energy. It does not increase your cholesterol, but actually helps lower it. Coconut oil is wonderful diet addition for just about everyone.

Coconut oil is full of healthy benefits. Next to mother's milk, it is nature's highest source of medium chain fatty acids (MTC's), which raise the body's metabolism, leading to weight loss. It has fatty acids such as lauric acid and monoglycerides, similar to mother's breast milk.

When lauric acid is consumed in the body, whether through mother's milk or coconut oil, it enhances the immune system to help the body fight infections, diseases, bad bacteria and yeast invasions. Lauric aid is known to be anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial.

Coconut oil raises the metabolism, which helps people who are trying to lose weight and people suffering from thyroid problems. Coconut stabilizes the blood sugar levels, helping with diabetes. It also protects the heart cells from damage.

Coconut oil helps relieve the symptoms of menopause, and pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS). Many women who suffer the effects of PMS have found the symptoms lessened when coconut oil was consumed often in their diet.

Coconut oil does not raise cholesterol. Studies have shown that people who use coconut oil have lower cholesterol than those who do not, even when the people consuming coconut also eat other high cholesterol foods like eggs and meat.

Coconut oil smells good, tastes pleasant and is so good for our bodies that some people consume it straight, by the tablespoon, and use it in place of other oils on their salads. Many people also use it as an ingredient when juicing or making smoothies.

If all this good news isn't enough, coconut oil one of the best things you can apply directly on your skin and hair. It not only gives temporary relief to skin problems like rashes, but it aids in healing and restoring skin to a younger appearance. It has also been known to help with people who suffer from yeast infections in the skin, and there is solid research that shows the MCTs in coconut oil do overcome yeast infections. Coconut oil also makes an excellent massage oil.

Honeybee Gardens: All Natural Body Care & Cosmetics

"I'd like to encourage other women to not be afraid to pursue their dreams. If you really believe in it, you can achieve it. The only one that holds you back is yourself."
Melissa Hertzler
President/CEO
Honeybee Gardens, Inc.
All Natural Body Care & Cosmetics
www.honeybeegardens.com

CELESTE: How did you come up with the name Honeybee Gardens?

MELISSA: Actually, my husband did. Everything I did stemmed from the herbs I grew in my little garden. In Greek, the name Melissa means Honeybee. Since everything came from "Melissa's Gardens" he thought it was a good idea to call the business Honeybee Gardens. I liked the sound of it. The simple innocence exemplified how I want my products to be perceived.

My Honeybee Gardens order arrived quickly and I couldn't wait to sample everything!

My Experience:

******************************************

CELESTE: Share some Honeybee background.

MELISSA: Okay, here's the abbreviated version. After graduating from college and being disenfranchised by my chosen profession, I knew I needed to do something I loved. And I love herb gardening. Also, I was newly married to a husband who hated shaving. His skin would become so red and irritated, and I wanted to create something that would relieve his suffering. I was also learning about the harmful chemicals found in so many body care and cosmetic products, so I knew the local department store wasn't the answer. My knowledge of herbs lead me to develop an aftershave formula (after much trial and error!) that allowed him to shave with zero redness, no pain, no irritation. Our very first product and hence my own business was born.

CELESTE: Is Honeybee Gardens organic or natural?

MELISSA: Both. But we don't put organic on our labels. Mostly because it is too volatile of a word right now in our industry, and still loosely defined. But also because I can't always get the organic ingredients I need. So if 90% of the time I can get the organic peppermint we use in our aftershave, but 10% of the time I can't, then I'd be lying on our label if I listed it as organic. I won't do that.

Natural is Better

Honeybee Gardens products are created entirely of natural materials. You can actually pronounce our ingredients! We reuse and recycle as much as possible and, perhaps most importantly, we DO NOT test ANY of our products on animals (those are strict orders from our dachshund 'Ginger', ten pussycats, 'Pekoe' the lovebird, 'Tortuga' the turtle and 'Dim Sum' the Chinese hamster)!

We take great pride in providing our customers with the finest herbal products and customer service. We sincerely welcome comments and opinions, and are available to help with any questions you may have. So try our all-natural herbal body care products and experience nature's supremacy.

CELESTE: What sets Honeybee Gardens apart from other natural companies?

MELISSA: We're not just here to sell a product. We really believe in what we're doing. I want to create the healthiest, safest products, while still making sure they're effective and fun. Too often I would hear about health store brands being boring or 'that natural stuff doesn't work'. I knew I could do better. I knew I could create a lip balm that would honestly relieve chapped lips and cosmetics that were as fashionable as they were fun. Natural doesn't have to mean dull or second-rate. I want natural to be number one!

We're not your typical cosmetics company. We don't make products that follow the hottest new trends. We don't make false advertising claims or try to convince you that our products can perform miracles. All we do is make really good products made from really good ingredients that really work. That's it. We try to satisfy the real needs of real people. Oh yeah, we have really great customer service too.

CELESTE: Tell us about your private label products.

MELISSA: We do get lots of request for private label. In fact, I started a new company in 2001 just to handle our private label business. Unfortunately, it's harder for us to do private label for very small companies. Our batch sizes tend to be too big for their needs. I've been approached about creating a private label brand - something standard that small companies could just buy a few units of whenever they needed it, and I am considering that.

The Health Benefits of Seeds, Nuts, Fish and Oils

Author: Scott Meyers

Sunflower seeds are not just fun to eat; they are also very nutritious to the body. While sunflower seeds contain approximately the same amount of polyunsaturated fats as their counterpart nuts, they are much richer in antioxidants that ward off cancer, cataracts and heart disease. Sunflower seeds are also high in vitamin E content. It has been shown by research studies that consuming high amounts, which is to say in the area of 100 IU (the RDA is presently at 15 IU on a daily basis) of vitamin E on a daily basis helps to cut the risk of developing heart disease by approximately 40 percent.

Fish and fish oils contain the very important omega 3 fatty acids that the body requires to help lower the blood fats, and in particular triglycerides. It is believed that high amounts of triglycerides in the blood are more dangerous for females than they are for males. Eating regular portions of fish is also beneficial for lowering blood pressure and for easing many of the discomforts that arthritis brings with it. The fish highest in omega 3 fatty acids include salmon, blue fish, anchovies, sardines, mackerel, herring and lake trout. It is recommended that an individual eat two to three servings of fish per week. It is not recommended that you start taking fish oil supplements unless you first discuss it with your physician.

Nuts are very good for the heart. In particular, walnuts have been found to lower levels of bad cholesterol a great deal. By getting rid of saturated fats in the diet and instead substituting polyunsaturated fats that are contained in nuts you can do a great deal of good for your heart. Nuts, listed in order of those containing the highest levels of monounsaturated fatty acids to the least include macadamias, hazelnuts, pecans, almonds, cashews, pistachios, Brazil nuts, peanuts, pine nuts and walnuts.

Olive oil is very rich monounsaturated fat, which helps to decrease the level of cholesterol in the blood. Olive oil is a mainstay of those living in the Mediterranean region. Oliver oil can be purchased in regular, light tasting, virgin and extra virgin. If you do not particularly like the taste of olive oil then reach for canola oil as it contains plenty of monounsaturated fats and is low in saturated fat content. Other types of oils that are healthiest because of their monounsaturated fats include flaxseed oil, peanut oil, sesame oil, grape seed oil, soybean oil and walnut oil. If you want to decrease your bad cholesterol (LDL) by anywhere from seven to ten percent then substitute either olive oil or canola oil fro butter or margarine (more so if you are replacing butter which contains more fat than margarine). Be aware however that all oils have at least 144 grams of fat, not to mention 120 calories for every tablespoon.

Flaxseed oil is another oil that is beneficial for health. This type of oil comes the flax plant and is an "oilseed." Flaxseed oil is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids as well as lignans. Eating a diet rich in lignans helps to decrease the risk of developing many different kinds of cancers, not to mention osteoporosis and circulatory disease.

Seeds, nuts, fish and oils have many health benefits and if you are looking to live a healthier life they should become a staple in your diet.

All Natural Creations: Shea Butter Face Cream- Compact For Safe Cosmetics Signor

Visit All Natural Creations here

I've been on the hunt for a new face cream that is natural and free from
harsh chemicals. It wasn't easy. But alas, I found
All Natural Creations Shea Butter Face Cream.

This has a healthy rating on the Skin Deep database, and is
NOT linked to cancer like so many name-brand products are. Yay!

All Natural Creations IS a Compact for Safe Cosmetics signor.

This Q&A from the Skin Deep database
"Are ingredients in personal care products actually harmful?

While some companies make products that are safe to eat, other companies choose to use known human carcinogens or developmental toxins. Nearly all these chemicals can penetrate the skin, and some we ingest directly from our lips or hands. More than one-third of all personal care products contain at least one ingredient linked to cancer. When risky and unstudied chemicals are used in cosmetics, the stakes can be high — unlike trace contaminants in food or tap water, chemicals in cosmetics are base ingredients."

Natural Skin Care for Your Baby

Author: Christine Harrell

A surprising number of mothers will buy expensive lotions and soaps for their sensitive skins, and yet bathe and shampoo their baby in cheaper, chemical-ridden products.

Even those moms who believe they are being very careful about the products they use on their baby are likely not being careful enough.

An article in Clinical Pediatrics reports that over three out of four infants suffer rashes within the first few months of births. Sadly, the reason for such frequent breakouts appears to be the skin care products parents use to keep their babies' skin moisturized. A baby's skin, like all organs, is not fully developed and isn't as effective a barrier against toxic substances. Natural skin care products are much, much safer than the chemical-heavy conventional ones.

The Danger of Over-The-Counter Products
Many products supposedly designed for infants' sensitive skin are the same harsh cleansers for adults, just put in a cute package with a higher price. Reading labels to see what is really in the bottle is even more critical for your baby than for yourself.

Many bubble baths destroy beneficial bacteria on the baby's skin. In fact the problem is so bad that infant bubble bath carries an FDA warning against excessive bathing. These products often contain known carcinogens and irritants such as formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane.

Shampoos are no better. Ingredients to avoid include quaternium 15, imidazolidinyl urea, and parabens. Of course you should also stay away from artificial colors and fragrances.

Baby powders are one of the most common treatments for diaper rash. Many moms use cornstarch, and treat rash with whipped-up egg white that's allowed to dry and form a protective barrier.

Lotions and oils that contain petrochemicals, artificial colors, or artificial fragrances should never be used on a baby.

Natural Skin Care Products
Although most of the skin problems that babies face are due to dangerous ingredients in mass-produced skin care products, this is not the only concern. Even organic skin care products can cause problems if used excessively.

During the first year, babies do not need to be bathed frequently or even at all. An occasional wipe of the genitals and buttocks with a damp cloth is usually all that is needed. If a bath is needed, a small amount of warm water should suffice. Babies don't sweat like children and adults so don't need soap most of the time. If necessary, use a mild soap containing palm, coconut, or olive oil and use as little as possible. Never use antibacterial soap.

Shampoo is also seldom, if ever, needed during the first year. If needed, use a very mild organic shampoo.

Lotions that contain soothing or healing natural skin care ingredients such as chamomile or aloe can be beneficial. They moisturize well and a gentle massage can help a fussy baby sleep.

Shea Butter, The African Wonder

Author: Donatien Ahoua

Shea butter is an extract from the shea nut seed of the tree called shea or karite tree. This tree matures in twenty years, but its full production doesn't come until it is forty-five years old. The shea tree can produce harvestable nuts for 100% shea butter even if it is already two hundred years old. The natural ingredients in shea butter are the reason for its effectiveness.

Shea butter is currently available in an organic, unrefined form and refined form. Despite both being pure shea butter, the difference lies in the way they are produced. The refined shea butter has no natural fragrance and natural color. On the other hand, the organic, unrefined form of shea butter is in its natural state. Research has concluded that the refined form of shea butter is not as effective as the organic, unrefined one.

Major Uses
The primary use of pure shea butter is as a moisturizer and as an emollient. Many products carry shea butter but not pure shea butter due to its expensive cost. Many cosmetics mix other ingredients to the shea butter to cut expenses. Pure shea butter has been found to be very effective in fading scars and stretch marks. This in itself is one reason why so many women buy 100% shea butter. Other benefits of shea butter are keeping the skin elastic and supple.

Raw shea butter in shampoos and conditioners also help brittle hair regain its softness and elasticity. It can revitalize and prevent further breakage of the hair. Pure shea butter is also used for tribal ceremonies in Africa where the trees are common to. Other uses for raw and pure shea butter are as cooking oil and conditioner for leather and wood. 100% shea butter is claimed to have anti-inflammatory properties, and has a reputation of helping lessen irritation from psoriasis, rashes and other skin disorders.

The Cost
The unrefined version of shea butter is more expensive than the refined version. This is because organic products take more time to process and produce compared to those products that are refined and process without any regard for safety. The price for 100% shea butter usually depends on the demand and the supply of the product. The uniqueness of the product means that it will always have a high demand and lesser supply since it takes seasons to grow the nuts and prepare the cream.

Wholesale
If you need large quantities of shea butter for your cosmetics business, you need to find a wholesale shea butter source. Today's consumers are very demanding about how the products they buy not only affect their bodies, but the world. When buying your wholesale shea butter, make sure the suppliers offer only fair trade unrefined shea butter. By insisting on fair trade wholesale sheabutter, you not only make your company look good to concerned customers, but you are investing in making the crops of shea nuts you depend on more reliable, since the workers have more of an incentive to keep working.

Go Green With The Mother Of Temporary Tattoos: Mother Ink

Q&A
Laura Silverthorn/President

CELESTE: How did you come up with the name Mother Ink?

LAURA: I wanted something all-encompassing and that everyone would remember. We all know Mother Goose, so I imagined what a Mother Goose figure would look like if she was also a tattoo enthusiast. Hip. modern, edgy, but still classically feminine. She embodies the attitude that tattoos may now be mainstream, but still a little naughty. Above all, the "Mother of Temporary Ink" is just that, a mother, and I love her for that!

LOVEBIRDS

CELESTE: What makes your temporary tattoos eco-friendly?

LAURA: The packaging. I really worked hard to find a way other than using plastic wrapped tattoo sheets. When I see this kind in the store, I just cringe. A thin plastic film is necessary for protection, but the outer wrapper is completely reusable as a colorful paper cd/dvd sleeve. I make all the tattoos a special size to accomplish this so that when you are finished with your tattoo, you now have a pretty little Mother Ink media sleeve...and no guilt! And of course, we only use paper to ship, even with our wholesale accounts. Peanuts are for elephants, not geese!

FOOTPRINTS
CELESTE: Ingredients in your tattoos?

LAURA: Wow, there are a lot! It's actually intimidating to look at the long names, but the tattoo inks are vegetable based and FDA approved for skin use (unlike Henna). Adhesive is added to make the inks stick to the skin, similar to an adhesive bandage. All ingredients are listed on the Mother Ink website "How to Apply" page.

CELESTE: What is the most outrageous tattoo you've ever designed?

LAURA: The real one on my lower back, but I'll never tell!

CELESTE: If someone asked you to design a tattoo for them, would you and how long would it take?

LAURA: I have had so many requests for custom tattoos, and even heard of someone getting a permanent Mother Ink "Peace" tattoo. I guess that's sort of stealing, but I was excited! If I were really quick at doing them, I would take custom orders, but unfortunately I'm a total slowpoke. My passion for design means I probably spend way too much time on each one. Believe it or not, I was actually going to hire out the design aspect when I first started the business. It was serendipity that I couldn't afford it!

PEACE

CELESTE: How long do the tattoos last on your skin?

LAURA: That's a tough question. It varies so much from person to person (due to activity level and skin type), but the range is anywhere from one to seven days. The best way to make them last is to cleanse the skin well before applying and not to place them where friction from clothing will be an issue.

PEACOCK

CELESTE: Laura-what inspired you to start designing tattoos?

LAURA: I got pregnant! Then I searched all over to find beautiful, hip temporary tattoos with which to decorate my growing belly, only to find the usual "clip art" varieties. I had heard about the dangers of Henna (not to mention many women can't afford this option), and decided to make them myself. Mother Ink was born!

CELESTE: Would you like to add anything else, Laura?

LAURA: Yes. As much as I love real tattoos, I think that (like most people) I'm fickle. I urge young people, as well as adults, to try temporary tattoos as a way to express themselves...temporarily. I will always be wearing a fresh, new, creative design that I love today. Will you?

LAURA'S BIO: Laura Silverthorn is a former nurse, foreign aid worker, and art school drop out. She conceptualized the Mother Ink Brand in early 2007 while pregnant with her first child and brought it to market in 2008. She currently lives in Philadelphia with her son Sean Patrick.

Does The Price Of Your Perfume Add Up To Health Issues?

s The Price Of Your Perfume Add Up To Health Issues?Author: Gregg Hall

Almost everything made today includes some kind of fragrance. It is in soaps, cleaning products, laundry detergent, deodorants, and more. I could list a lot more but then all we would have would be a list. We utilize perfume for air freshener, on our own bodies and on the bodies of our pets. The problem with all of this is that the proliferation of all of these chemicals could be contributing to making you feel ill.

The use of fragrances is nothing new, they have been used for centuries dating to biblical times but it is only now that we have begun to see some of the issues arising from the use of perfume. One of the main reasons for this, I think, is that throughout the ages fragrances were created from natural ingredients while now the vest majority of scents on the market are made from chemicals which leave a toxic vapor trail.

The reason for making the fragrances with synthetics is simple; it is much cheaper and faster to produce once they have the formula down. Some of the chemicals used like petroleum are proven and well documented to contain dangerous toxins that can cause health issues from birth defects to disorders of the nervous system, and even cancer.

The fragrance industry that uses these chemicals is completely unregulated because they are not thought to be producing anything dangerous. They don't have to supply the FDA with any date or information of testing, safety, or their formulas. Some people are more sensitive to these chemicals than others, so while it may not affect you it could very well be harming someone in your home. For people who are highly allergic to some of these chemicals they don't have to smell them, it can just be laundry soap that has an allergen that causes them to break out in a rash when they put on a freshly laundered piece of clothing.

Some are so hyper sensitive to certain perfumes that just one sniff of the scent can cause shortness of breath, rapid breathing and heart beat and other reactions. Some other very common signs of someone who is highly allergic are sore throat, sneezing, nausea, and watery eyes. In many cases if the chemical is absorbed through the skin it has an even more powerful impact.

There are many establishments today that are beginning to implement fragrance free policies due to the allergic reactions that are being seen. Not only do the ask people not to wear any scented products but they also use only unscented cleaning products for their janitorial services. As more and more people display reactions to the chemicals we will see companies all across the country following suit with similar policies.

Just When You Thought It Was Safe To Eat Veggies By Amy Todisco

Green Living Expert, Amy Todisco
http://www.greenlivingnow.com

Most of us eat veggies because we know that they are healthy for us, and most of them really taste good. At least we thought they were healthy for us. Well, guess what? A recent University of Minnesota study published in the Journal of Environmental Quality found that antibiotics given to animals could end up in your veggies (gasp!).

Here's the problem:

Raw and/or lightly composted manure is often used as fertilizer on conventional farms. In contrast, manure used on organic farms must be composted or applied at least 90 days before harvest. No such requirements exist on conventional farms.

In the study, researchers found that corn; cabbage and green onions all absorbed the antibiotic, chlortetracycline from the manure fertilizer from pigs that were given the antibiotic. Chlortetracycline is a member of the tetracycline class of antibiotics used in human medicine. It's used to treat upper respiratory tract infections and other illnesses. When humans ingest antibiotics, especially unnecessary ones, it can make bacteria in the intestines become drug resistant. So, if you really needed that antibiotic at some point, it wouldn't be effective. Also, all antibiotics (as I understand it) kill off both the good and bad bacteria in our bodies leaving us more vulnerable to yeast infections, and other health issues. Beyond the immediate effects to our bodies, resistant bacteria created on a farm can contaminate air, water and soil, and travel significant distances.

Did you think antibiotics were just used to treat disease? I did. Apparently they are also fed to animals to make them grow faster and to compensate for overcrowded, unsanitary conditions on industrial scale farms. Not good for the animals, and not good for the consumers of those animals either.

Sadly consumers have no idea that they are consuming antibiotics in their food, there isn't any label requirement to reveal this information. I guess it's just like genetically engineered organisms, pesticides and other toxins in conventional food. That's not to say that it's impossible for antibiotics to appear in organic food too. It would seem unlikely though due to the requirement to compost the manure and apply it 90 days before harvest. But who knows? I'll continue to put my money on the organic stuff, what about you?

P.S. Occasionally I get asked what a person can do who cannot afford organic food. I usually suggest the following: (1) grow it yourself and freeze and can it for the winter. No land? Grow your own in a community garden plot, or in a neighbor's garden (get the soil tested for heavy metals. Call your local extension service for more information). Shop at local farmer's markets (fresher and usually more affordable). Join a community supported agriculture group (perhaps some farmers will barter your share of the harvest for something of value to them). I've heard that big box stores, like Costco's and Big Lots, carry some organic food. So, if you already shop there, choose the organic.

Why Mineral Make-Up?
SOURCE:
http://www.naturalhealthcarestore.com/makeupwhyada.htm
  • Purity! Mineral cosmetics are loose powders containing crushed minerals that have been extracted from the Earth's surface. Many dermatologists report that because high quality mineral cosmetics eliminate the use of classic "irritants" such as fragrances, binders, synthetics, dyes, and preservatives it is considered "purer" and can be kinder and gentler to the skin (see Dr. Endorsements). Additionally, it's not absorbed into the skin and won't clog pores, but actually adheres to the skin providing perfect coverage all day!

  • Natural SPF! Mineral make-up is formulated with a high concentration of the natural minerals titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which are two ingredients commonly used in sunscreens. These minerals offer a natural sun protection effectively blocking both UVA and UVB rays. Ada Cosmetics offer protection of up to SPF20.

  • Water Resistant! Mineral make-up is water resistant and does not smear with perspiration making it the perfect choice active individuals. Great for athletes including swimmers, runners and bikers in addition to anyone who might get caught in the rain. Just pat dry with a towel!

  • Non-Comedogenic, Non-Acnegenic, Anti-inflammatory! Mineral make-up is so gentle it's recommended by many Doctors! Two of the main ingredients in mineral make-up, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, are known for their natural anti-inflammatory properties (see Dr. Endorsements).

Why Ada Cosmetics?
  • Better Prices! Ada Cosmetics provides it mineral cosmetics at the best price! As compared with the top brands you'll save 40% to 85%!

  • Better Ingredients! Ada Cosmetics prides itself on using only top quality ingredients! As such, Ada is a step above Bare Minerals and Sheer Cover as it excludes Bismuth Oxy-Chloride an ingredient known to irritate the skin causing itching, rashes, and cystic acne. See our comparison chart below!

  • Dr. Endorsements! As a result of its high quality ingredients Ada has received multiple Dr. Endorsements supporting the safe, effective and therapeutic effects of their make-up products.

  • Pure and Natural! Ada Cosmetics is a proud signer of both the NIRC's "Truth in Labeling" pledge and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics Pledge. These pledges commit that Ada both uses natural ingredients and assures the use of no chemical ingredients known or thought to have major negative effects including links to cancer. Note that many major cosmetic companies have thus far refused to sign this pledge including Bare Minerals and Sheer Cover (as of 11/5/07). Review links to Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and NIRC.

Beauty With A Cause: Educating Women, Product Dedications, Donations to Breast Cancer, Ovarian Cancer & Scleroderma Research

Patsy Pink & Queen Amy Lip Sheers
***************************************************

Q&A with
Julie Ann Price
President
Beauty with a Cause

CELESTE: Tell us about your inspiration for Beauty With A Cause.

JULIE: I started my company after learning what was in the products I was using. I was very uncomfortable using products that contained artificial ingredients that were suspected hormone disrupters and carcinogens. I spent a great deal of time researching what was available for "safer" products and was disapointed. I couldn't find a site that had a wide range of products available at a price I could afford. So...I figured I couldn't be the only one in this position and started making my own products.

CELESTE: What sets B-cause apart from all other organic companies out there?

JULIE: B-cause has a lot of differences from other companies.
  • We are very focused on education. I want women to make smarter purchases for themselves and their families.
  • We do lectures on the connection between cancer and skin care products.
  • Our newsletter [B-cause We Care Newsletter Archive: http://www.beautywithacause.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=11]is full of wellness articles and product articles on products outside of the skin care arena such as laundry detergent. If my products don't fit the bill for someone, that is ok. I am more than happy to point them in other directions.
  • I offer samples (www.beautywithacause.com) of the majority of my line and encourage women to try before they buy. I offer a refund on the cost of the sample if you order the full size product later on. I give a full refund of the product costs to anyone who is not happy with the product.
  • Our products are named after women who have battled breast cancer, ovarian cancer and scleroderma. There is no charge to do this. It is a nice way of celebrating the strength of the women that surround us. We are a very personal company and follow up with every person who places an order.
Want to know more about product dedications? Visit our website at Beauty with a Cause

CELESTE: Do you donate a portion of the proceeds to charities?

JULIE: We donate 10% of the profits from the sale of all of our products year round to breast cancer, ovarian cancer and scleroderma research.

Duchess Eye Powder
Duchess is a shimmery pastel pink color.

Learn more about Duchess eye powder here:
CELESTE: Are all your products natural/organic?

JULIE: My products are mostly natural and many have a large percentage of certified organic ingredients. However, any product that contains water has to have a preservative to prevent against contamination. There is no such thing as a natural preservative at this time so that is where artificial ingredients do come into my product line. Having said that, none of my products contain parabens or ingredients that are highly suspected to have negative side effects.

CELESTE: If you could share an important secret to women about cosmetic and
personal care products that they may not already know-what would it be?

JULIE: Read the ingredients. Don't be fooled by marketing. Many of the big brands that are known as being "natural" have some nasty surprises hidden in their ingredient list. I have seen well known brands have one or two great non-toxic products but then see that the rest of their line is toxic.

CELESTE: If a woman is considering switching her conventional beauty products and personal care items to organic-which would be the most important product(s) to go organic first?

JULIE: The ones to switch first are the ones that she uses daily and of those, the ones that stay in contact on her skin the longest. For most women that is lotion, deodorant and facial moisturizer. To make it less overwhelming she should only replace a little at a time. When one product runs out, replace it with a non-toxic version. Whenever possible she should try a sample of the product before she invests in the full size item. Just because a product is "natural" does not mean that everyone can use it. Some women have reactions to certain essential oils and scents. That is why a sample is advisable.

CELESTE: Julie, would you like to add anything?

JULIE: We are also environmentally aware of the impact our company has on the environment. We use minimal printed material. For example, we do not include packing slips in our shipments. Our brochure is printed on recycled paper and is only distributed to first time customers. We are working on packaging that has a low impact on the environment. Our workshop uses power purchased from wind generated power sources.
